Alex Schnell

Secretary, United States War Dogs Association, Inc.

Alex’s love for dogs began early with his childhood German Shepard. Alex enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2012, to pursue his passion for dogs and follow in his older brothers footsteps to become a Military Working Dog (MWD) Handler. In 2013, his goal was accomplished when Alex graduated from MWD School and returned to his unit at Camp Lejeune, NC. Alex attended follow on schools such as Specialized Search Dog Course and the Inter-service Advanced Skills K9 course with his assigned MWD.

In 2014, Alex had the opportunity to join the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) Multi-Purpose Canine (MPC) program. He was assigned to MPC Bass and together Alex and Bass completed three combat deployments together; to Iraq, Somalia, and Afghanistan. During their time overseas Alex and Bass had many experiences and accomplishments, none greater than bringing all of their fellow service members home alive with them.

Alex was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in October 2019. MPC Bass was able to retire the at the same time. After separating from their service MPC Bass was recognized for his courageous service by receiving the Medal of Bravery presented by the Animals in War & Peace Association. Alex currently works for the Transportation Security Administration as a Training Instructor for the Canine Training Center in San Antonio, TX. The Military Working Dog community remains very important to Alex and he is very grateful to be able to support all of the MWD teams through US War Dogs Association.
